The first e-cigarette was invented by a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik in 2003. Hon Lik was a heavy smoker and wanted to find a way to quit smoking. He was inspired by a dream he had in which he was drowning in a sea of cigarette smoke. In his dream, he saw himself using a device that looked like a cigarette but was powered by a battery and produced a vapor instead of smoke.
Hon Lik spent several years developing his invention, which he called the Ruyan, meaning “like smoke.” The Ruyan was introduced to the Chinese market in 2004 and quickly became popular. It was not until 2006 that e-cigarettes were introduced to the rest of the world.
The first e-cigarettes were very different from the ones we see today. They were larger and heavier, and the batteries did not last very long. The cartridges were also very small and did not hold much liquid. The e-liquid used in the cartridges was also very different from what we use today. It was made with propylene glycol, which is still used today, but also contained a lot of other chemicals that are no longer used.
Despite the differences between the first e-cigarettes and the ones we use today, they were still a revolutionary invention. They provided smokers with a way to get their nicotine fix without inhaling the harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke. Today, e-cigarettes have evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, with millions of people around the world using them as an alternative to smoking.
